From the Introduction:

The demands of energy and physical stamina needed by massage therapists and other bodyworkers are sometimes so great that the client's care or the therapist's body can be compromised.

In order to fully give to another, we must first take care of our own health requirements. Meeting this challenge leads the therapist's practice to evolve in a way that allows them to provide more effective care while doing less harm to their own bodies. We might find that by having a clear mind and heart, and preparing ourselves physically, our work would be more effective, and we (and our clients) would become happier and healthier. By having more awareness we realize our limitations.

Physically, we may find there is a limit to how much we can lift, squeeze, pummel and tap, We may need to include opposite actions to balance those we habitually perform at work. Mentally, we may need to create nurturing environments for ourselves both in and out of the office. Emotionally, we may require more time by ourselves, or more time to share with our family and friends, or the need to engage in something else that feeds our souls. By maintaining a balance and becoming more responsive to our own needs, we allow for all levels of growth in our lives.

Practicing massage therapy provides a perfect format to experience and integrate these different parts of ourselves. We use a caring heart with its intuition, an inquisitive mind with its knowledge and then through touch we deliver the benefits of a finely tuned massage. Most clients easily detect a significant difference when a massage has been delivered with full attention and intention.
